Second half surge takes Jones past Payton

CHICAGO — Jones may have started a week-and-a-half later than most teams, but the Eagles sure have been making up for lost time against the top teams in the Chicago Public League Premier Division.

After starting its season with a 2-1 loss to Young, the Eagles tied Lane last Friday, setting up an all-important matchup with a squad that’s had a hot start to the season — Payton.

The Grizzlies came into Wednesday’s afternoon tilt after dropping their first conference matchup Monday, a 2-1 decision to Young. Unfortunately for them, their losing skid hit two after Jones (6-1-1, 3-1-1) took the visitors down 3-0 in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood May 12.

Payton battles back against perennial playoff foe

When it comes to the state playoffs, Payton and Marian Central always seem to be on a collision course. The two have met in either the supersectionals of the Final Four in three of the past seven years. With its 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 win in the Antioch Supersectionl Saturday, Payton holds a 2-1 edge in those meetings as the Grizzlies head downstate for the third time in six years. Continue reading

Defeating a team three times in a season is considered one of the more difficult feats to accomplish. Payton found that out on Tuesday night as Northside extended the Grizzlies to three sets before the Mustangs’ run ended with a Payton 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 win in a semifinal matchup at the Class 3A Westinghouse Sectional.
