When it comes to the state playoffs, Payton and Marian Central always seem to be on a collision course. The two have met in either the supersectionals of the Final Four in three of the past seven years. Defeating a team three times in a season is considered one of the more difficult feats to accomplish. Payton found that out on Tuesday night as Northside extended the Grizzlies to three sets before the Mustangs’ run ended with a Payton 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 win in a semifinal matchup at the Class 3A Westinghouse Sectional. After bowing out in the first round last year, Payton returned to its successful roots Thursday by winning its sixth regional in seven years, defeating Bulls Prep 25-9, 25-12 in the Class 3A Senn Regional. Continue reading
