Caroline Segal has been playing basketball for as long as she can remember.
After growing up having played in the Glencoe Park District, the New Trier Feeder Program and the All-In Athletics travel basketball program, the Glencoe resident headed to play at North Shore Country Day School for her four years of high school basketball.
While her senior year isn’t over yet, Segal will leave the school as one of the best players to ever play in the Raiders’ girls basketball program, especially after becoming only the second player in program history to score 1,000 points Dec. 17, 2019, in a 38-12 win over Parker in Winnetka. Kick-It, an Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) program, is a national volunteer-driven effort focused solely on raising money for childhood cancer research. For many athletes around the country, it’s a chance to help be part of a good cause, one that could help others of all ages.
Loyola Academy football junior kicker Nate Van Zelst decided to be one of those helped. He became a member of the The Kick-It Champion for Kids Program — a part of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation — a National Organization registered 501(c)3 charity whose mission is to “change the lives of children with cancer through funding impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to cure childhood cancer.” Continue reading →

When it comes to the state playoffs, Payton and Marian Central always seem to be on a collision course. The two have met in either the supersectionals of the Final Four in three of the past seven years. With its 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 win in the Antioch Supersectionl Saturday, Payton holds a 2-1 edge in those meetings as the Grizzlies head downstate for the third time in six years. Continue reading →
Defeating a team three times in a season is considered one of the more difficult feats to accomplish. Payton found that out on Tuesday night as Northside extended the Grizzlies to three sets before the Mustangs’ run ended with a Payton 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 win in a semifinal matchup at the Class 3A Westinghouse Sectional. A year after losing a heartbreaker to Simeon in the sectional final, Harlan was looking to make sure the same thing didn’t happen again.
