When it comes to the state playoffs, Payton and Marian Central always seem to be on a collision course. The two have met in either the supersectionals of the Final Four in three of the past seven years. Payton found that out on Tuesday night as Northside extended the Grizzlies to three sets before the Mustangs’ run ended with a Payton 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 win in a semifinal matchup at the Class 3A Westinghouse Sectional. After bowing out in the first round last year, Payton returned to its successful roots Thursday by winning its sixth regional in seven years, defeating Bulls Prep 25-9, 25-12 in the Class 3A Senn Regional. Continue reading
Winning one city title is difficult, but to do what Young did Friday is a sign of consistency and success. The Dolphins took home their fourth consecutive Public League title by defeating Brooks 25-21, 25-23 at Hyde Park. Continue reading
Having already advanced further than it had in school history, it would be normal for Brooks to be nervous with every match it played. If the seventh-seeded Eagles had any anxiety coming into their Public League quarterfinal matchup against second-seeded Northside, one wouldn’t be able to tell.
