Taft’s Kaitlin Ulbert makes lasting impression

In a day that saw Young win three of five titles at the Public League Individual Championships, it was Taft’s Kaitlin Ulbert whose star shone brightest.
Ulbert, who won the No.1 singles title over Young’s Alex Boston 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, fought fatigue as the day went along. After playing a closely contested semifinal match against Lindblom’s Toni Allen, the Taft senior played a title match against Boston that lasted over three hours.

“I had to fight through it (fatigue) and my training is what got me through it, ‘’ said Ulbert. “The training that we do not only in the season but in the offseason helped me get through it.’’

The transfer from Highlands Ranch, Colorado made sure her brief stay in the Public League was a successful one.

“It’s pretty cool to have done that in my year here,’’ said Ulbert. “I got to be part of a great team and it was a great experience. Hopefully we can continue it the next couple weeks.”

After dropping No.1 singles, Young went on a roll, winning No.2 singles and No.1 and 2 doubles.

Young’s Kara Barclay defeated Anikka Villegas of Payton 6-1, 6-3 to win No.2 singles. The No.1 doubles team of Devon Mitchell and Nicole Kaplan gave Young its second title of the afternoon, as the second-seeded Dolphins defeated Morgan Park’s team of Shelby Daniels and Courtney West 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Young claimed its third and final title of the day as it defeated Payton 6-3, 7-5 in the No.2 doubles match final.  Payton won the third doubles title over Young 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The Public League will continue its postseason next weekend, when it holds the team championships at Tuley Park. In those championships, teams will face off as if it were a dual match all the way through the title match.
