Loyola’s Lazzaretto ready for bigger challenge

The Atlantic Coast Conference is the pinnacle of women’s collegiate lacrosse. An ACC program has played for the national title in each of the last eight seasons and last year’s final Inside Lacrosse national rankings had five ACC teams among the top-10 at the end of the season.

So to get a chance to play in the nation’s top conference is an opportunity that would be to say no to. Loyola Academy junior Ellie Lazzaretto couldn’t pass it up, which is why on Jan. 22, the Lake Forest resident announced her commitment to play at Duke University starting in the fall of 2021.

Whether it be with returning alumni, family, friends or the athletes following the school’s motto of being “Men and Women for Others,” there’s something that stands out about the school.

That was none more evident this spring when the Loyola girls lacrosse team embraced the presence of Ryan O’Connor, 3-year-old son of Loyola alumna, and a lacrosse All-American, Elizabeth O’Connor and her husband Ben.

Girls lacrosse: Playing for injured teammates, Loyola’s second half overpowers rival New Trier

Loyola’s Caroline Witkowski shoots as New Trier’s Courtney Kaskey unsuccessfully attempts to block it. Loyola defeated New Trier 18-12 on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Loyola’s Munz Campus in Glenview, Ill./ Tracy Allen

When one thinks about Illinois high school girls lacrosse, two schools come to mind: Loyola Academy and New Trier.

The Ramblers have won eight straight titles, including five over the Trevians, and only dropped one game to an Illinois team since 2010 (a 2014 loss to New Trier). In that same time frame, the Trevians have dropped 13 in-state games (including the state playoffs), 11 of which were to Loyola. Continue reading

Loyola’s Mangan ‘confident’ in college choice

The last name Mangan is one that is well known to the Loyola Academy community. With four brothers having walked through the Wilmette school’s halls, all having played multiple sports, it’d be fair to say they’ve left a mark on the school.

The fourth — and final — Mangan, Matthew, will leave Loyola as a two-sport athlete, having played both football and basketball his last two years at the school. His play on the football field helped him gain some collegiate looks, especially as his senior season went on.

On Thursday, Jan. 30, Mangan made his official decision on where he’ll be playing football for the next four years of his life: the University of Dayton. Continue reading
