Coming into Thursday’s Super Sectional, Loyola Academy had multiple players who had scored double digit goals.
It’s that depth that helps explain why the Ramblers are well on their way to winning their eighth consecutive state championship.
They got one step closer May 26, defeating Lyons 16-2 at New Trier.
“We noticed a lot this season that when we started slowly, it impacted our game and we didn’t play that well,” Loyola’s Clare Eilers said. “We always push to start off strong, get goals early, especially on a hot day like this we wanted to keep possession so we didn’t have to run up and down the field as much and tire ourselves out.”
Eleven different players scored for the Ramblers Thursday, starting with Colleen Huffman, who put in a goal a mere 50 seconds into the game. Tessa Waters added another 56 seconds later to give the Ramblers (22-5) an early advantage.
Lyons scored to cut the lead to 2-1 with 21:34 remaining in the half, but that’s when Loyola turned on the jets. The Ramblers scored six unanswered goals in a 12 minute span, led by Brennan Dwyer and Libby Germano, who both had two in the run.
“Everyone out here has great stick skills, works their butt off,” Eilers said. “We really have some great depth and it’s always nice that everyone gets a chance, especially since our coach knows these is some of our last players’ games.”
