New Trier has a storied girls soccer program that has won five state titles and a second place finish in the past 13 years. It also has two Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year award winners with KayAnne Gummersall winning in 2006 and Maddie Johnson winning in 2004.
The program added a third member to that group on May 17th when it was announced that Kelly Maday was named the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year for the 2015-16 season.
“It’s definitely an honor, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my teammates and coaches in this program,” Maday said. “It’s an awesome accomplishment but it makes me feel like there’s even more of a target on me and it’ll push me to be better.”
Maday won the award despite sitting out with a bad ankle injury for a good portion of April, causing her to miss seven matches. After scoring twice in the regional semifinal, she has 15 goals and 13 assists on the season.
“I’m getting close to 100 percent,” Maday said.
“They recognize what type of player Kelly is on the field,” New Trier coach Jim Burnside said. “She’s a dynamic, aggressive, knowledgeable and team-oriented player who is scratching at the school’s all-time assist record says a lot about the person and the player.”
“And I’ve never seen someone rehab so hard to come back to help her team.”
New Trier, which has won the last two Class 3A state titles, is looking to become the first school to win three consecutive state titles since St. Charles won five straight between 1995-96 and 1999-2000.
“We just have to take it one game at a time and not look at that end goal of winning state because in past years, I think it’s been a goal of ours, but if we take one game at a time, break it down and see how we can perform best against them, we can figure out how to play against them.”
Maday has signed to play her college ball at the University of Illinois, where she will play with fellow New Trier grad Jenna Miller.
