Lane captures four-peat

Lane seniors Natalie O’Connell, Meghan LaVelle and Allison Cortez don’t know what it’s like not to win a Public League title.

The three captains, who have been on the varsity since their freshman year, helped the Indians wrap up their fourth consecutive girls swimming title Sunday, when Lane beat runner-up Northside 403-370 at UIC.

“It’s actually really exciting finishing first all four years, especially since I know I, for one, didn’t think I would be on varsity freshman year,’’ Cortez said. “Our senior year was the big finale for us. We knew we had a good team but knew we had to work to make it. We wanted it not only for us, but our teammates.’’

The meet wasn’t always in hand as the Indians were up by only 12 after nine of 12 events.

“Actually I was kind of nervous,’’ O’Connell said. “After Northside won the 200-yard medley [relay] and with their depth in diving, I knew we still had some work to do.’’

Lane and Northside combined to win every race, Lane finishing with eight wins, including the last five. LaVelle, O’Connell and Cortez had a hand in each of the five victories.

The two front-runners broke three meet records. Northside’s 200 medley relay team of Alison Kiefer, Lena Spear, Marti Hale and Sophia Antonio won in 1 minute, 52.29 seconds. Lane also broke the record by swimming 1:52.44. Both teams also beat the 200 freestyle relay record, with Lane finishing in 1:39.93 and Northside in 1:42.67. LaVelle broke the record in the 100 backstroke by nearly two seconds, finishing the race in 58.52.

“It’s more special to set the records here in our senior year,’’ LaVelle said. “It’s a thing where we get to leave our legacy, it’s really cool.’’

LaVelle finished with two individual wins, adding the 200 individual medley to the backstroke. Lane’s Jazmin Rivera won the 100 butterfly (1:00.97) and 500 freestyle (5:23.58). O’Connell added wins in the 200 freestyle (1:58.96) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.38). Lane won the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle (3:47.36) as well.

“I think it’s kinda fun to have teams aiming for us,’’ said LaVelle. “We come in like, ‘We got this, we got this,’ but we get a little scared because there are some girls that are hard to face. We take the motivation and use it to help us go faster.’’

Northside’s other wins came from sophomore Lena Spear, who swept the sprints (24.28 in the 50 free and 53.80 in the 100 free), and diver Sarah Martin (254.95 points).
