After winning four consecutive Public League titles, one would think Young had earned the label of ‘powerhouse.’ However, after winning its fifth consecutive title Sunday at Indian Boundary by six strokes over Payton, Conor Dore didn’t seem satisfied.
“We love winning city titles, I wouldn’t call us a powerhouse, but it’s cool,’’ said Dore, who captured the individual title in a one-hole playoff. “We don’t want to just win city though. Our goal is to send players downstate and be able to compete for a state title.’’
The Young junior finished ninth at the state tournament last season, becoming Young’s first-ever state medalist and the first Public League golfer to do so since Fenger’s Mike Cooper in 1973.
In order to earn his second consecutive individual title, Dore had to compete in a one-hole playoff with Payton/Jones Co-op’s Gabe Geleerd, as each player shot a four-over 76. Dore birdied the first hole of the playoff to earn the title.
“It’s really exciting to win city,’’ Dore said. “Winning in a playoff hole is pretty exciting though. Knowing it’s sudden-death makes you want it more.’’
Other scoring members of Young’s city-winning team included Adam Shaw (81), Molbe Dillard (82) and Jeff Fischer (84).
Erica Jackson, of Payton/Jones, was the only girl to compete in the boys competition. The Jones student finished third, shooting a 78 on the day.
Lane’s Matt Reuping tied Dillard to finish fifth, shooting an 82.
Next up for Dore and his Dolphin teammates is the New Trier Regional.
