A year after having Taft end its five year winning streak as Public League champions, Payton took back the title, as it defeated Taft 198-204 Sunday at Indian Boundary. The Grizzlies were able to edge out the Eagles by having all its players shoot 53 or lower.
Taft senior Jenna Greco won the individual title by defeating Sophia Sodolski in a one hole playoff.
“Winning the title is hard, because everyone does really well,’’ Greco said. “Winning in a playoff is even harder because it’s pretty much sudden death and you know you have to work harder for it.’’
Finishing in the first group out, Greco had to wait a couple hours before playing Sodolski in the playoff. It didn’t seem to bother her as she parred the hole, giving her the title.
Despite winning several medalist honors, including the city title, Greco said she never felt any extra pressure.
“All of the girls I’ve played with and against have all been really nice,’’ Greco said. “I never felt any pressure and if I have a bullseye on my back I never felt it.’’
Payton’s top two finishers, Chloe Wilson (46) and Caroline Rooney (48) finished tied for third and fifth respectively.
Kyra Vidas carded a 49 for Taft. Young was led by Sodolski and Margaret Finger (46), as the Dolphins claimed a third-place finish.
The teams will have to prepare for upcoming IHSA regional tournaments.
“These events are good for us because it helps us learn to play under pressure,’’ Greco said. “We’re going to see other competition, and the playoffs are harder so all the competition we can get works to our advantage.’’
