Elmwood Park Wins Opener

Elmwood Park starts season fast

Elmwood Park produced some hot shooting offensively and also created numerous turnovers en route to an easy 72-53 win over Northtown in both teams season opener at the Parker Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday.

The Tigers (1-0) burst out to a quick 16-3 lead by forcing five turnovers in the Pumas’ first eight possessions and forcing them into tough shots in the other three. Conversely, Elmwood Park scored on seven of its first nine possessions.

“It’s a good game for us to get the jitters out of the way,’’ said Elmwood Park junior Presley Garrett. “It’s always a good test playing against these guys, but I think the game got a little fast for some of us at certain points. We held it together though.’’

The Tigers maintained a commanding lead for most of the game, but Northtown refused to let it get too out of hand as it had last year when Elmwood Park routed the Pumas 71-27. Trailing 57-36 at the end of the third quarter, Northtown went on a quick 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter, causing Elmwood Park coach Mike Wasielewski to call a timeout.

Elmwood Park responded to the Pumas’ spurt by scoring six of the game’s next eight points essentially crushing any hopes of a late Northtown comeback.

Garrett scored a team-high 18 points for the Tigers, while senior Elliott Perez had 14 points and junior Hassan Basbous added 11 points. Denzel Winfield scored 15 points and James Paul-Emile chipped in 14 points to pace the Pumas (0-1).
