What We Learned Week 3

  • Geno Smith went to complete 34 of 39 passes for 411 yards, moving past Marc Bulger (8,153) to set the school record for career yards passing (8,191).  He also has thrown for 734 yards and nine touchdowns. All while only throwing nine incompletions in two weeks.  Yes, the same number of incompletions as touchdowns.  Just like RG3 last year.
  • With the win over James Madison, West Virginia improved to 13-0 against FCS schools.
  • Florida State has allowed only one field goal and a total of 310 yards and 19 first downs in its first three games.
  • It was sixth time Florida State has shut out Wake Forest, which suffered its last shutout two years ago in Tallahassee, 31-o.
  • A win over Western Michigan gave Minnesota its first 3-0 record since 2008.  They’ve also already matched their win total from each of the past two seasons.
  • Cal’s backup tailback Brendan Bigelow raced 81 yards on his first carry of the game — the longest run ever by an opposing back in 90-year-old Ohio Stadium.
  • Zach Maynard’s touchdown pass to Chris Harper resulted in the first points scored by California in the first quarter this season.
  • The beat for Oklahoma State goes on as they scored on their first eight possessions to build a 44-0 halftime lead and set a school record with 742 yards of total offense.
  • After allowing only 59 yards in the first quarter of its first two games, Virginia Tech allowed 202 yards against Pitt and was outscored 14-o.

  • Larry Dixon had three scores on 136 yards rushing and Trent Steelman had two touchdowns on 116 yards rushing for Army, while Raymond Maples added a score on 159 yards. It was Army’s first game with three hundred-yard rushers since 1996.
  • TCU had won 16 of its past 20 games against schools from automatic BCS-qualifying conferences, including a stretch of five straight against Big 12 schools. Among the victims have been Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Iowa State — all schools that they’ll be facing in coming weeks.
  • The Horned Frogs still managed their 25th straight conference victory going back to their membership in the Mountain West.
  • According to STATS LLC, the last Football Bowl Subdivision player with at least two rushing, one receiving and one return touchdown in the same game was East Carolina’s Chris Johnson — now of the Tennessee Titans — in 2007.  Until Miami’s Duke Johnson did it Saturday.
  • After their 30th consecutive loss to Clemson, Furman, of the Football Championship Subdivision, opens 0-3 for the first time since 1979.
  • In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year and three games, Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas is kinda good.  He has 222 all-purpose yards on 10 touches Saturday.
  • The last time Alabama, which has now forced 12 turnovers this season, had back-to-back shutouts was against Vanderbilt and Kentucky in 1980.  It has shut out Western Kentucky and Arkansas in consecutive weeks.
  • Alabama’s 52-0 win over Arkansas is its biggest shutout win over an SEC opponent since 1948 vs Auburn (55-0).
  • This is the 7th time in school history (since 1894) that Arkansas has lost by at least 52 points but just the 3rd time in the last 90 seasons.
  • The loss was the first shutout for the Razorbacks since a 28-0 loss to LSU in 2005. It was also the first time Arkansas was held scoreless in Razorback Stadium since a 7-0 loss to Baylor in 1966.
  • Arkansas (1-2, 0-1), which followed last week’s shocking loss to Louisiana-Monroe with the school’s worst defeat since a 70-17 loss to Southern California in 2005.
  • Georgia Tech’s spread-option offense overwhelmed Virginia with three gains of 60 yards or longer on its first four plays.
  • Georgia Tech scored 50 or more points in an ACC game for the first time since beating Wake Forest 52-20 on Oct. 14, 2000. The 56 points were the third-highest total for the Yellow Jackets in an ACC game.

  • Boise State won its eleventh straight home opener.
  • Syracuse (1-2) has won its last 29 games against current FCS members, a streak that dates to a 14-13 loss to Holy Cross in October 1958.
  • Washington built a 45-0 lead at halftime. The 45 points tied the Huskies school record for most points scored in any half, last accomplished in 1999 against Oregon State.
  • Florida has now won eight consecutive games against Tennessee.
  • This comeback was particularly noteworthy because Tennessee hadn’t lost a game it led at halftime since Derek Dooley took over as the Vols’ coach in 2010. Through the first 27 games of Dooley’s tenure, the Vols had been 13-0 when leading at halftime and 0-14 when tied or behind at the midway point.

  • With three touchdown catches Saturday, Chad Bumphis has tied the Mississippi State record with 17 career touchdown receptions.
  • Baylor’s eight-game win streak is the second longest in the nation.
  • For the 4th straight year, USC fell to Stanford. Matt Barkley is 17-and-6 against the REST of the Pac-12, but finishes his career without a win against the Cardinal. In four games against Stanford, Barkley has just one more touchdown (7) than interception (6).

  • The last time a top-10 team scored fewer than Michigan State did at home against the Irish was in 1966 when they shut out USC 51-0. Notre Dame had its best showing on defense anywhere against a top-10 opponent since beating Texas A&M 28-3 in 1993.
  • Michigan State had its worst showing on offense at home since losing 20-3 to Central Michigan in 1991.

Rouse ran for 144 yards on the night, giving him 3,519 to Rivers’ 3,473.
  • Colorado was outgained 516-123 in the first half, and the Bulldogs had twice as many touchdowns (eight) as the Buffaloes had first downs (four). It was the most yards allowed in any half by Colorado and one point shy of UCLA’s 56-point first half in 1980 against the Buffaloes.
  • Colorado avoided the most lopsided loss by a team from a BCS conference against a team from a non-automatic qualifier when Josh Ford scored on a 1-yard run with 2:58 to play. UCLA still holds that ignominious record with a 59-0 loss against BYU in 2008.
  • In the first quarter vs Colorado tonight, Fresno State had two offensive plays of 90-or-more yards. Since the start of the 2004 season, no other team had two 90-yard plays from scrimmage in the same *game*, let alone a single quarter. In the first two weeks of the season, there were only two offensive plays of 90-plus yards.
