Lane escapes Farragut with stoppage-time goal

If Lane is to continue its dominance over Public League opponents, it’s going to have to keep attacking the goal and not allow teams to come back on them. The Indians needed a Jasmin Carrera goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time Saturday to escape Farragut 3-2 in a Public League quarterfinal at Lane.

“We can’t be happy and relaxed when the score is 2-0,’’ Carrera said. “I wanted to score more and we just couldn’t get it through for some reason. It was good to get the goal when we needed it, though.’’

Lane (15-4-2) dominated the first half, allowing the Admirals, who suffered their first defeat of the year, only two shots the entire half. The Indians got on the board when Sofia Pavon scored 11:02 into the game. That was after Lane had peppered the Farragut goalie with four shots earlier in the half.

Farragut (13-1) did something few teams have been able to do against the Indians — it shut down their offensive attack.

“They played more of a style where they pulled a lot of people back so we couldn’t run out on them and score a lot of goals,’’ Carrera said. ‘‘That and the weather I think slowed us down. The mist made the field wet and I think slowed our quickness down.’’

Farragut was finally broke through in the 73rd minute when Alicia Torres’ free kick from 35 yards out snuck inside the top crossbar, just over the outstretched arms of goalie Ana Hernandez.

The Admirals got their second goal off of another Torres free kick, this one redirected by Isabel Salazar in the 81st minute. That set up Carrera’s dramatics as the junior lofted the ball over the goalie, who had come out of the goal to play the ball.

Lane moves on to play Curie in the semifinals Tuesday.
