MJ Pritchard knew that if New Trier was to continue its success, it couldn’t look past anyone and needed take Saturday’s Glenbrook South Regional match-by-match.
The Trevians did just that, as they fought their way to an easy regional title, their fourth in five years.
New Trier finished with 207.5 points, 53 points ahead of runner-up Prospect. Wheeling finished third with 125 points.
“”It’s important to get a good result here, because it’s what determines your seed for sectionals,’’ said Pritchard, who earned an 11-2 major decision over Glenbrook South’s Jimmy Binder for the 113 pound title. “My goal was to get to 30 wins and that happened with the championship win, so I’m pretty excited about that. It gives me more confidence as I move on, too.’’
“It’s nice to come back and win it (the regional) this year,” said Pritchard. “Not making it to sectionals hurt but we knew what we had to do to make it back and we did what we needed to do.’’
The day’s biggest surprise were Glenbrook North’s Cort Ro, who came in with a 7-20 record but ended up winning the 126-pound title.
New Trier tied Hersey with three winners on the day. Colin Kenyon pinned Sam Lobono of Prospect in 1:27 to win the 106-pound title. Jack Connor, who earned a 15-10 decision over Leo Giordano of Wheeling, had the Trevians’ other first-place finish.
Other winners were Stephfon Scales (120), Conrad Bugay (132) and Hunter Rollins (160) of Hersey, Loyola’s Patrick Dancer (138) and Michael Paloian (182), Michael Maksimovic (145) of glenbrook North, Eddie Scanlon (170) and Igor Romanowski (285) of Wheeling and Prospect’s Jon Bilancia (195) and Max Triveline (220).
