Week 2 Observations

  • Brandon Weeden rewrote the Oklahoma State record book against Arizona with 42 completions on 53 pass attempts. He finished with 397 passing yards, narrowly missed throwing for 400 yards for the 4th time in his career.
  • Missouri had won 22 straight nonconference regular season games prior to Friday night’s loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
  • With his 201 receiving yards against Louisville, T.Y. Hilton broke his own single-game receiving record for FIU since it joined the FBS in 2005. Hilton has four of the top five receiving games by a Golden Panther during that span.
  • It was FIU’s first win in six tries against the Big East Conference. They are 2-0 for the first time in their short history (football program started in 2002).
  • This was the 59th time that Iowa and Iowa State had played each other, starting in 1894. The 44 points by Iowa State are the most they’ve ever scored against their in-state rival. Previous high was 36 in 2002 (won 36-31).  It was also the first overtime game in the series.
  • Michigan State’s defense dominated Florida Atlantic, which had one first down and 48 yards offense Saturday.
  • B.J. Cunningham’s juggling catch on the Spartans first drive gives him 149 for his career. He passes Matt Trannon for the most catches in Michigan State history. (also had another catch on the drive).
  • Toledo may have lost the game, but they scored the most points (22) by an Ohio school against Ohio State since 1909.
  • Auburn continues to find ways to get it done. It has won 17 straight games, the longest active FBS streak. The Tigers have won 10 straight games decided by eight points or fewer, also the longest active FBS streak.
  • Michael Dyer has four touchdowns through two games this season.  He had five touchdowns all season last year.
  • Pete Thomas became Colorado State’s first sophomore quarterback to reach 3,000 career yards passing.
  • Paul Richardson caught 11 passes for a school-record 284 yards to help Colorado rally from a 10-point deficit in the second half of their overtime loss to Cal.  Despite both teams being members of the Pac-12, the game was a nonconference game because it had been previously scheduled as so.
  • Tyler Hansen became the first quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards against the Bears since Alex Brink of Washington State had 421 yards on Oct. 22, 2005.
  • The win over Minnesota was New Mexico State’s first victory over a Big Ten team, and their first win against a foe from a BCS conference since beating Arizona State in 1999.
  • With Stanford’s win Saturday, Andrew Luck improved to 22-5 as a starter and needs only three more wins to become the winningest quarterback in school history. He tied Jim Plunkett for second all-time Saturday.
  • Rice snapped its 10-year losing streak against Bowl Championship Series teams with a 24-22 victory over Purdue on Saturday.  The Owls (1-1) had lost 22 consecutive games to BCS opponents since a 15-13 win over Duke on Sept. 8, 2001. Rice had not beaten a Big Ten team since a 40-34 win at Northwestern in 1997.
  • Austin Davis finished with 309 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-49 passing and broke Brett Favre’s career passing mark. Davis, who needed 74 yards coming in, broke the record of 7,695 set from 1987-1990.

  • South Carolina’s Melvin Ingram is the third player since 2006 to score a touchdown on offense and defense in the same game.
  • Syracuse has won 28 straight games against FCS teams and has not lost to one since a 14-13 setback at Holy Cross in 1958.
  • On Saturday, Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez and Michigan’s Denard Robinson both had their seventh career game in which they topped 100 passing yards and 100 rushing yards, the most in the FBS over the past two seasons.
  • Case Keenum, given a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after his early season-ending knee injury last year, has already thrown for 768 yards and seven TDs this season.
