Arizona State – After a one-year hiatus, the Sun Devils will be looking to get back to the College World Series after going 50-6. The team faced 1o ranked opponents throughout the season, going 17-5 against them. They also faced 16 NCAA Tournament teams and won 23 of those games.
The ASU offense is led by Katelyn Boyd, who leads the team in every offensive category. The junior leads the team in average (.431), home runs (15), RBI (54), SB (17), R (68), OBP (.551) and slugging percentage (.800). Boyd isn’t the only offensive stud on a team that has scored 412 runs through the regular season. They’ve scored 309 more runs than their opponents. While Anne Lockwood’s .315 average might not scare anybody, her power numbers more than make up for it. She stands behind only Boyd in home runs (13) and RBI (57).
As impressive as the offense is, the pitching has just been just as spectacular. The team is led by stud freshman Dallas Escobedo, who has a 27-3 record, 1.40 ERA, and a 250:65 K:BB ratio. But she isn’t the only stud in the rotation. Both Hilary Bach and Mackenzie Popescue have been quite impressive in their own right. Bach is 10-0, while Popescue is 13-3. The scary part? Bach is the oldest of the three and she’s only a sophomore.
Long Beach State – Long Beach State will be making its 20th appearance in an NCAA Regional Tournament, their first since 2009. They went 8-9 against tournament teams. The 49ers have won 13 of their last 16 outings.
Five Long Beach St. regulars are hitting. 315 or higher. Nalani St. Germain leads the team with eight bombs and 29 RBI. She’s also tied for the team high in hits with 49 and has a team-high 12 steals. Christina Schalig is second to St. Germain in both homers (seven) and RBI (27). Liz Javier is tied with St. Germain in hits and adds five doubles and a team-high two triples to her 25 RBI.
Erin Jones-Wesley is the team’s ace, after going 22-6 with a 1.45 ERA. She’s struck out 163 opponents. Taylor Petty has also been seeing a good amount of time in the circle. She’s racked up a 6-4 record in her 25 appearances with a 2.34 ERA and 91 K’s.
San Diego State – The San Diego State softball team earned a trip to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship for the fourth consecutive season and the seventh time in 11 years. They are 9-15 against teams who made this year’s tournament. Earlier this season, the Aztecs defeated Tempe Regional teams North Dakota State (3-2 on Feb. 11) and Long Beach State (3-0 on March 3).
This year, SDSU has set program records in slugging percentage (.444), runs (252), home runs (37) and RBIs (223). Lorena Klopp may not have have the greatest of averages (.265), but she leads the team with 15 home runs and 47 RBI. Hayley Miles leads the team with a .352 average, is tied for the team lead in hits with 51 and leads the team in steals with nine. Jen Wisneski leads the team in doubles with 11, is second in home runs with six and has driven in 26.
Bailey Micetich is the team’s ace. She leads the Aztecs with a 19-11 record and 1.86 ERA. She’s punched out 161 opponents through the regular season and held opposing batters to a .240 batting average.
North Dakota State – North Dakota State won its third straight Summit League Tournament championship by shutting out UMKC 5-0. With the win, the Bison reach 30 wins for the fifth straight season and in eight of the past 10. The team comes into the tournament having won 11 of their last 14 games.
Taylor Mortensen leads the offense with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. Nicole Rivera leads the team in hits (64) and stolen bases (21). Katie Tamayo boasts a .363 average, five home runs and 26 RBI. Brea Konz has 13 doubles and 22 RBI.
Whitney Johnson is the team’s ace, having gone 23-11 with a 2.11 ERA in 2011. She has started 33 of the team’s 55 games and has 225 strikeouts. She can be a bit on the wild side, however, having walked 122 and thrown 32 wild pitches.
