Tennessee – With their comeback win over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, the Vols secured their second conference title, first since 2006. UT has posted some nice wins this year, including one over the Dutch National Team. Including the SEC tourney, the Vols have now defeated LSU, Auburn and Georgia three time each.
Tennessee features an offense full of power, finesse and speed, as seven batters are hitting over .300, including two who are hitting over .400. Raven Chavanne is hitting a remarkable .457 with 84 hits and 62 runs scored. She also leads four players in double digit steals with 31. Jessica Spigner leads the team in home runs with 16 and has added 51 RBI. Despite leading the team in homers, she is only fourth on the team in runs batted in. Shelby Burchell is second on the team with 14 round-trippers and third with 53 RBI. Kat Dotson is the third member of the double digit home run club, after she belted 10 in the regular season and leads the team with 60 RBI and has 23 steals. Lauren Gibson leads the team in doubles with 13 and has 55 RBI.
The Tennessee pitching staff is led by the Renfroe sisters, Ellen and Ivy. Ellen, a freshman has put up some very impressive stats in her collegiate debut, going 26-5 with a 1.28 ERA. She has also struck out 251 batters. That’s not to say Ivy, a sophomore, hasn’t had an impressive season herself. She’s gone 17-4 with a 2.14ERA and has punched out 139 opponents.
Georgia Tech – After starting the season 9-4, the Rambling Wreck have compiled a 35-6 record, one which includes wins in 12 of their last 14 games. They put together a 11-3 record against xx NCAA teams.
The Jackets have nine players who have started 35 games or more and hit over .300. Kelsi Weserman has put up monster numbers, hitting for a .439 average, mashing 21 home runs and 64 RBI. Alysha Rudnik is second on the team with 16 home runs and has driven in 39 of her teammates. Kristine Prebe has a .343 average and 47 RBI.
Georgia Tech has actually used a three-pitcher rotation this year. Their leader in wins (20), ERA (1.55) and strikeouts (136) is Kristen Adkins. Her counterparts are Hope Rush and Lindsey Anderson. Anderson is perfect on the season with a 12-0 record and has struck out 119 batters, while Rush has put together a 12-4 record.
Liberty – The conference championship marks Liberty’s second title in program history. Their first came in 2002. Liberty is now 30-28 on the year.
Kelly Strickland is the offensive star of this year’s team, as she has smacked 16 homers and knocked in 46 RBI. Ashley Bensinger leads the team with a .349 average and is second on the team in both home runs (10) and RBI (37). Meredith Crisante has 32 RBI and nine home runs, while Jenny Law also has 32 RBI and nine doubles.
Katrina Johnson has made 31 starts for Liberty this year, coming away with a 15-13 record. Johnson also boasts a 1.95 ERA and has struck out 143 opposing batters. Tiffani Smith completes the two-woman rotation, as she has a 12-12 record.
Oklahoma State – This marks Oklahoma State’s third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 18th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma State is 1-1 all-time against Georgia Tech and 0-1 vs. Tennessee. The Cowgirls have never played Liberty. The team played in two prestigious tournaments, the Kajikawa Classic and the Cathedral City Classic. All in all they faced 20 NCAA Tournament teams and came away with a .500 record against them at 14-14. The Cowgirls, however, are coming into the tournament on a six-game losing streak.
Oklahoma State has five players hitting at a .314 clip or greater. Their power is provided by Julie Ward and Chelsea Garcia, both of whom have 11 home runs. Garcia leads the squad with 49 RBI. Ward adds 10 doubles and is second on the team with 41 RBI. Alysia Hamilton leads the squad with a .392 batting average 13 doubles and 61 hits. She also has 33 RBI. Mariah Gearhart has swiped 33-of- 35 bases.
Two Cowgirls, Kat Espinosa and Simone Freeman, lead the pitchers. Espinosa has started 22 games, while Freeman has 20 starts. Espinosa’s got a 20-6 record and 2.32 ERA. Freeman sports a 9-7 record with a 2.24 ERA. Even their strikeout totals are similar as Espinosa has 131 punchouts and Freeman 120.
