Second half propels Senn
Cody Gillard scored two rushing touchdowns and caught another as Senn defeated Schurz 34-6 Friday afternoon at Winnemac Stadium.
Gillard (16 carries, 171 yards) scored both of his touchdowns in the second half, as Senn (7-0, 5-0 Big Shoulders) extended its 12-6 halftime lead. His 58-yard touchdown run with 9:06 left in the third quarter was on Senn’s first play of the second half.
“We got off to a sluggish start today because we were amped up for homecoming, but we had a talk at the halftime and we straightened things out for the win,” Gillard said.
Senn got on the board on their first drive when quarterback Quinell Johnson lofted a 22-yard touchdown to Joshua Thomas. Johnson (6-for-11, 109 yards, two touchdowns) hit Gillard with a 45-yard screen pass that the running back scooted for another score.
Schurz went 69 yards to score its touchdown in the first quarter, but was then held to a negative-two yards the rest of the first half. Jamyrius Penn accounted for all of Schurz’s yardage, including his 40-yard touchdown run, in the first half.
Gillard’s 12-yard touchdown ended the scoring for Senn.
Penn led Schurz (1-6, 1-4) with 73 yards on seven carries.
