Coming off of its first loss of the year, Morgan Park knew that getting off on the right foot in conference play was vital. The Mustangs did just that Friday afternoon, defeating Amundsen 30-0 in both teams’ Prairie State opener.

No. 19 Morgan Park (3-1, 1-0) got on the scoreboard when freshman running back Charles Bournes scampered for a 46-yard touchdown on the team’s opening possession.

“We knew we had to keep our heads up after last week’s game (loss vs. Simeon),” said Bournes, who finished with 110 yards on 12 carries. “A loss doesn’t mean anything if you don’t worry about it. I knew as a freshman I just had to keep my composure.”

Later in the first quarter, Mustangs quarterback Dae’ Shaun Hurley (11-for-17, 158 yards, two touchdowns) hit Bournes on a slant and saw the back run 48 yards for another touchdown.

An interception by Breshawn Burton, one of two on the night, set up another touchdown, a one-yard run by Desmond Earls and the Mustangs never looked back.

Hurley’s second touchdown pass came in the fourth quarter as he hit tight end Devonte Jackson for a 20 yard score. The Mustangs closed out the scoring late in the game when backup quarterback Andre Newell hit Javon Bright for a 46-yard score.

Patrick McCoy completed 13 of 36 passes for 107 yards to lead Amundsen (0-4, 0-1).
