Lake Zurich moves on to sectional final

Lake Zurich’s Mattera leads Bears

Earlier this season, Lake Zurich pitcher Megan Mattera told her first-year coach Michaela Towne that she wanted to break the school’s single-season record of 12 home runs. Well Mattera did that and much more as she led the Bears (24-11) to a 1-0 extra-inning win over Barrington on Thursday.

After walking her previous two times at the plate, Mattera smacked a solo home run, her 13th of the season, to left field in the top of the eighth to account for all of the support she would need. The homer gives her 61 RBI on the season, also a school record.

“I was just trying to get on base and knew we needed to get runners,” Mattera said about her home run. “I didn’t think I got it over, it didn’t sound good off the bat and I just kept running until I heard something.”

The junior pitcher also threw a one-hitter, allowing only one base runner after the fourth inning. Mattera (21-10) added seven strikeouts.

Kiley Dolezal (29-6) took the loss for Barrington, fanning seven as well. Jordan Wekong had the lone Bronco hit, as they finished their season at 32-6.
