No. 3 Fremd showed why it has one of the best offenses in the area, smacking two home runs and six hits in a 5-1 Class 4A Buffalo Grove Sectional semifinal victory over Warren on Wednesday.

The Vikings (30-4) used a Kelly Voigt home run in the second inning to get out to an early 1-0 lead. The homer was Voigt’s third in two games, after she belted two against Prospect in Saturday’s regional title win. Lauren Zaworski hit a three-run shot in the third to put the game out of reach at 4-0.

“I was just seeing the ball really well and I’m relaxing,” said Zaworski, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and the home run. “I went to the batting cage yesterday and got some really good swings in.”

If it wasn’t for some spectacular Blue Devil defense, the score would have been much worse. Lexi Leneau robbed Voigt of an apparent double in the fifth and took away an apparent home run from Megan Hubbard in the bottom of the sixth.

“They’re a very good ball club and the way they played defensively was outstanding. We hit the ball real hard but their defense made plays when they needed to,” said Fremd coach Jim Weaver.

Warren (28-8) got its only run off of Viking starter Lena Brottman (28-2) in the top of the seventh off a home run by Kayla Hurd. Brottman struck out nine and allowed only four hits in the complete-game victory.

Hurd took the loss for Warren, going six innings, striking out six and walking none.
